POLAND

The Lutheran Service Society of New York is pleased to be able to help find healthy homes and loving families for children living in orphanages in Poland. There are toddlers, school aged children and some children with special needs. These children all deserve and anxiously await a loving home.    Adoption is a far-reaching and deeply emotional experience. It is a commitment for generations. If you make the decision to adopt a child from Poland (or from anywhere else) you will be blessed by one of the greatest gifts from God - a child.

PARENT REQUIREMENTS

Age of parents:   Parents should be no more than 40 years older than the adoptive child.

Other Children:  May have other children in family.

U.S. Citizenship:  One parent must be a U.S. Citizen.

Marriage: Couples must be married at least 2 years.. Previous divorce is acceptable A single woman may adopt a special needs child.

Travel:
2 Trips are required-
1st trip both parents must travel and spend 3 to 4 days in Poland meeting the child, orphanage director, center director and getting documents for I-800 submission

2nd trip both parents must initially travel to Poland to bond with the child and attend court proceedings. (varies any where from 3-4 weeks)

Then-
Both parents may stay in Poland for the duration of the adoption process (about 3 more weeks)
or
One parent may return to the US and the other parent remains in Poland for the duration of the adoption process.

CHILDREN AVAILABLE

Gender:  Either

Age:  Children are usually 16 months or older.

Health: The children live in orphanages and may have developmental delays. Health is generally good or medical conditions are correctable. Basic medical information and photos are generally available.

 Other:  Children with special needs are available.  Sometimes siblings are available.

TIMING

Application: Families can begin the application process once a home study is completed.

Referral: Average time from submission of dossier to referral is 8 to 14 months. Refererrals of sibling groups may take longer.

PRIMARY COSTS TO CONSIDER

International Program Administration Fee. (review of home study, assistance/ coordination in assembling of documents, program consultation, telephone, fax, program development)

Poland Foreign Fee. (Poland representative and translation, Poland Attorney)

OTHER COSTS

  • Adoption Home Study
  • Criminal background and finger printing fees.
  • Costs for copies of birth cert., marriage cert. etc.
  • Certification and authentication fees for documents.
  • Federal Express/UPS charges.
  • USCIS  I-600A application.
  • Orphanage donation etc.
  • Travel, food and lodging.
  • Post placement costs.

Adoption process overview:

  • A family makes the decision to adopt internationally.
  • A family decides that they wish to adopt from Poland.
  • The family contacts Lutheran Service Society of New York for an application.
  • LSS of NY works with the family to locate a licensed agency to conduct the home study investigation.
  • The family signs agreement and waiver forms for LSS of NY .
  • The home study agency sends the home study to LSS of NY for review and to ensure it is “Poland and Hague Convention-ready”.
  • Once the home study is reviewed and approved, LSS of NY sends the home  study agency and the family an approval letter.
  • The family, with assistance from LSS of NY, completes the I-800A application and submits with home study to USCIS.
  • The family continues to prepare the dossier.
  • The family submits complete dossier LSS of NY and the referral process begins.
  • Once a referral is identified, the social worker and couple are notified and
  •       provided with all information received, including photographs
  • Once a referral is accepted, the couple completes the referral acceptance  letter.
  • The family awaits notification to travel for their first trip
  • The family travels to Poland for 4-5 days, receives documents needed to  submit I-800
  • The family, with assistance from LSS of NY, completes the I-800 application  and submits to USCIS for provisional approval
  • Upon receipt of I-800 provisional approval, family notifies LSS of NY and  sends copy of approval. LSS of NY informs Poland of the approval and  the court is petitioned.
  • Family is informed of court date, bonding period and departure date.
  • Family travels to Poland to bond with the child and complete the adoption.
  • Upon returning home, post adoption reports are due at 3, 6 and 12 months.
